Stoicism is often seen as a form of living without any emotion at all. That is not true, as Stoics can experience anger, grief, fear etc. But they’re instead taught to focus on what’s in their control and disregard the things that are not. They often have an apathetic view and tend to focus more on appearances than the content of what they say or do.
They believe that everything must be done for virtue and according to nature — which means the right action. They must also act according to the notions of virtue, not for selfish reasons. They believe in divine providence — but one that does not interfere with people’s choices and which does not dominate their lives.
Stoics aren’t opposed to emotions, they prefer the good ones when they occur and the bad ones when they do not. There are many kinds of emotions including anger, pride, envy, and self-pity. They tend to be more fixed on good emotions while ignoring bad ones.
Stoics are also taught to focus on the future and not dwell on the past. They believe in being virtuous, kind, and generous. Contentment is a key element of stoicism—as well as being tolerant and humble from time to time.
Stoics are also supposed to be indifferent to pain and pleasure and even death because it is not under their control. They can see their own faults and vices but are careful not to dwell on them for too long or allow it to dominate their lives too much.
What does it mean when someone is being stoic?
When someone is being stoic it means they are being indifferent to pain and pleasure. It is usually just a general term used to describe someone who is not being emotional, showy, or overreactive.
Stoics usually have a kind of detachment or a lack of passion in their lives. They see everything as external rather than as if they are part of themselves. This doesn’t mean they don’t experience emotions, but they tend to ignore them and focus on the things that are worth focusing on — namely virtue and right action.
Why do people think stoicism is a negative thing?
People think stoicism is a negative thing because it is seen as apathetic, not caring about your emotions or feelings. But it’s more of how you look at things and how you perceive life than that itself. The Stoics feel this is the best way to live life itself.
Who are the Stoics?
Stoicism was an ancient Greek school of philosophy founded in Athens by Zeno of Citium in the early 3rd century BC. While it was heavily influenced by certain teachings of Socrates, it is much less individualistic than Plato’s philosophy. Unlike Plato’s “Theory of Forms,” Stoicism teaches that there is only one universal truth, which is that the universe is ruled by a single Logos (divine reason). The Stoics are known for teaching that “virtue is the only true good,” and that personal virtue (or “virtue of character”) is a necessary and sufficient requirement for eudaimonia, translated as “happiness“, and thus considered the whole purpose of human life.
Why are stoics commonly depicted as emotionless?
People commonly depict stoics as emotionless because they are often seen to be unconcerned with their emotions and even to actively work against them. They try to not let things like anger, grief, and fear affect them. This is contrasted with being emotional which is often seen as being highly upset about things.
